James Brett is a new and upcoming twenty year old acoustic soloist from the seaside town of Brighton, England.

Brett started to write his own music towards the beginning of 2016 and since then has released two EP’s, ‘Love Is Like A Drug’ and ‘When I Fail To Even Start (Just Watch Me Fall Apart)’, as well as a single ’Since When Did Smoke (Make Anything Clear?).

They’re made up of layered acoustic guitar, giving them old Oasis b-side vibe, with heartfelt and simply put lyrics about love and the falling out of love.

I had some questions for James about the process of recording his recent EP, the main themes within his musical influences. Here were his answers!

You released an EP ‘When I Fail To Even Start (Just Watch Me Fall Apart)’ last year. What song off of it are you most proud of? Why?

I’d say probably the title track, ‘When I Fail To Even Start’. I’m just really proud of the lyrics in that one. I think that it’s the best track I’ve done to date.

How did you find the process of recording said EP? Was it enjoyable?

Yeah, I found it fun but I’ve got to say the writing of it was more enjoyable than the recording process. However, when it was all done I did feel proud!

What are the main themes within your music? Do you think that one day this will change?

I just write what feel at that moment in time, whether it be love or loss….or even sleep deprivation!

Are there any hidden meanings in your music? If so, would you care to share them?

I like to leave it up to people to find their own meaning in my songs. I mean after all I wouldn’t wanna know what my favourite songs are really about to be honest.

Who are your main musical inspirations?

Arctic Monkeys, Oasis & The Velvet Underground I’d say, but there’s too many artists to mention.

Do you think that these musical inspirations have drawn you to the music industry?

Oh no, yeah for sure! If it wasn’t for hearing these bands then I probably wouldn’t have been motivated to even write my own music in the first place!

Do you prefer to play live or to record? Why?

As proud as I get when having more songs online, I’d for sure say that playing live is better. I’m aiming to expand and reach other places in terms of venues up and down the UK and abroad. The prospect of that excites me.

You’re still quite young so if you were too fast forward five years., would you see yourself still making music? Where would you want to be by that point?

I would love to still make music 5 years down the line. I aim to have at least put out my debut album and to be playing live in other places other than near my home town on a regular basis.
